Short answer: all seven churches of Revelation are in western Turkey, within one driving circle, and the full circuit takes six days with a single internal flight. The route runs from Laodicea back to Ephesus, day three is the long one, and the letters matter more than some of the stones · brief your client accordingly.

Where the seven churches actually are

Every one of the seven cities addressed in Revelation 2 and 3 has a modern Turkish location, and all of them can be visited today:

  • Ephesus · Selçuk, near Kuşadası · a vast excavated Roman city
  • Smyrna · modern İzmir · the Roman agora sits in the city centre
  • Pergamum · Bergama · acropolis, Asklepion and the Red Basilica
  • Thyatira · Akhisar · a small site in the middle of town
  • Sardis · Sart, near Salihli · gymnasium and the largest ancient synagogue ever excavated
  • Philadelphia · Alaşehir · a few columns of the Church of St John
  • Laodicea · just outside Denizli, ten minutes from Pamukkale · a large, actively excavated site

Nothing requires a special permit and nothing is closed to visitors. What the sites do require is context, which is why this route is sold guided.

The order in the book, and the order on the road

John names the churches in the order a messenger would have walked them: north from Ephesus up the coast, then inland and south to Laodicea. A circle through Roman Asia.

The practical way to drive that circle today is the other direction. Denizli has an airport an hour from Istanbul by plane, and Laodicea is ten minutes from it. So the tour flies in, starts at the church that received the last letter, and works back to Ephesus, the church that received the first. Same circle, no wasted road day at either end.

What your client sees at each stop, honestly

Four of the seven are substantial sites: Ephesus, Laodicea, Sardis and Pergamum can each absorb hours. Smyrna is a fine Roman agora inside a modern city. Thyatira and Philadelphia are modest · a fenced excavation, a few columns. Say this before the trip, not during it.

The point of those two stops is not the masonry. Thyatira received the longest of the seven letters and was the home city of Lydia, the seller of purple. Philadelphia is one of only two churches John does not rebuke. A guide who reads the sites against the letters turns the smallest stops into the ones people talk about at dinner · the lukewarm water pipes at Laodicea are still there, calcified, and the theatre where the silversmiths rioted in Acts 19 still stands at Ephesus.

How many days the circuit takes

Six days, five nights, with this shape: fly Istanbul to Denizli on day one, Laodicea and Hierapolis on day two, the three inland churches on day three (the long day, some 370 km), Pergamum and Smyrna on day four, Ephesus on day five, and departure from İzmir on day six. Two nights in Pamukkale, one in Bergama, two in Kuşadası.

It can be compressed, but only by cutting churches, and for the travellers who ask for this route that defeats the purpose. All seven, none skipped, is the product.

What is in the price, what is not

Our 6-day Seven Churches of Revelation tour is private, from 1,576 USD per person for a group of four, with the internal flight, hotels with breakfast, an English speaking guide on all four touring days and every entrance fee included. Lunches and dinners are not included, deliberately · on our private tours clients eat where they like, and the guide always knows where that should be.

It combines naturally with Istanbul before or after, and we can add guided Istanbul days and the İzmir to Istanbul flight to the same quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit all seven churches of Revelation today?

Yes. All seven sites are open to visitors in western Turkey, and the full circuit fits in six days with one internal flight from Istanbul to Denizli.

Do the seven churches still exist as churches?

No. They were congregations, not buildings, and what remains today are the ancient cities those congregations lived in · from the vast streets of Ephesus to a few columns at Philadelphia.

Is the route suitable for church groups with older travellers?

Mostly yes, with two honest warnings: day three is long with an early start, and Ephesus is a long walk on ancient stone. A private tour lets the guide pace both around the group.

Which airport does the route use?

In through Denizli, out through İzmir Adnan Menderes. If your client connects through Istanbul, the İzmir to Istanbul leg can be added to the package.
